Champs of the Sand Crowned! (Wednesday’s)

Spring I at Factory of Champions has now come to an amazing close, and with an amazing finish might we add! Four teams battled it out tonight for the opportunity to hoist the coveted banner, but only one team was granted that opportunity. With all teams now receiving a seventh game, the party last even longer and we even had our first grill sighting!

Our Social Team of the Week goes to Fighting Irises! A returning team from last summer, they came back and took to the courts hard, that is, with the booze! They were an awesome team all season long, had tons of fun, and were the first to bring out the grills in 2017!

Teams took the courts tonight in perhaps, we’ll call them less favorable conditions. Heavy rains the night before left the sand very compact and even a few puddles. Despite the elements, no team was deterred from their mission. First up, I’d Hit That, our talented free agent team that went undefeated, defended the net very well against a few big hitters. Miscommunication and mental errors though seemed to be their downfall tonight. I’d Hit had to rally back in both sets, but SMASH was too much tonight, taking them 25-22, 25-19. Opposite them, second seeded Spiked Punch took on the third seeded Rehab Dream Team. These teams are familiar with each other and have even faced one another in championship matches in previous seasons. Punch didn’t quite look like they usual self today as they struggled a bit to defend the size of Rehab at the net. Their digs were phenomenal, but net play was the difference tonight as they fell in three.

This brings us to a #3 v #4 match-up for the championship game! After coming off a very intense semifinal win, Rehab looked to be dragging early. Their passing was not on point, and Smash certainly took advantage. Forced to call an early timeout, Rehab was able to recoup and get back to playing their brand of sand volleyball. Their serves would bring them back into contention in the first set, and this would lead the way for more momentum in the final few points. Rehab would rally back and we would have an incredible finish after being tied at 25, with a final score of 27-25. In the second set, SMASH needed to find a way itself to recover and giving up a set after their large lead. But the momentum was all in Rehab’s favor as Rehab would take the second set in convincing fashion, 25-17. Congratulations Rehab Dream Team!
