Champions Crowned! (Sunday’s)

Cleats and Cleavage

After yet another battle with Mother Nature that caused us to lose more time, teams braved the iffy field conditions to battle it out in the playoff tournament and hoist up the championship banner. The competition was fierce throughout the playoffs but in the final game to determine a champion, to familiar teams took the diamond for their chance to be called champs.

Slap a Pitch looking to complete the final challenge had to go against the old establishment as Cleats and Cleavage returned to the championship game, a place they are all too familiar with. This time however they would only be taking the field with nine players as they were a man short throughout the entire playoff run.

Regardless of number of players, they had taken care of business against some tough foes and no faced a fired up Slap a Pitch team who didn’t make any friends of their opponents in their playoff run. They dispatched two tough teams and were now dancing on the diamond with Cleats and Cleavage. With a single run in the top of the first Cleats and Cleavage broke the ice, but Slap a Pitch shattered it in the bottom half on the inning with four runs to take the early lead. After being held scoreless in the second inning, Cleats and Cleavage broke through for a maximum nine run inning capitalizing on pivotal mistakes committed by Slap a Pitch. After reestablishing the lead, they then executed a shutdown inning, not allowing any momentum and continuing to extend their lead in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Down but not out, Slap a Pitch refocused their efforts and cut into the lead with a three spot but time was beginning to become a factor. As many of the teams stuck around to watch this game, they drank the cold ones and jammed out to the good tunes and we even had one guy doing a fantasy football draft (good luck to your season). They saw Cleats and Cleavage continue to pull away with six more runs in the fifth to not only put the game almost out of reach but also kill the clock meaning no matter what, this would be the final inning.

With the last bit of effort they could muster, Slap a Pitch hit the ball decently but ultimately the night belonged to the nine men and women of Cleats and Cleavage closing out the game and the season lifting the championship banner once again, kings and queens of summer softball at Rusty Lyons.

Congratulations to all the teams who made the summer season fun, the fall season looks promising as some teams will merge and others will return to compete, drink, and eat their way to the championship. Cheers!
